Kalambaka Greece - Meteora monasteries

Meteora monasteries are in the Kalambaka (Καλαμπάκα) municipality and are the second largest and important complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries after Mount Athos. Meteora is located in the Thessaly Plain, 70 km west of Larissa, in the municipality of Kalambaka (Kalambaka) - Central Greece.

of seven monasteries built on the tops of hard-to-reach sharp rocks, like needles. They rise in the sky at 400 meters high and are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Most of the monasteries are perched on high cliffs and accessible by staircases cut into the rock formations, mobile stairs, and cable bridges.

Of the seven world-renowned monasteries of Meteora Greece, only six of them are accessible to visitors:

* The Holy Monastery of Great Meteoron - the largest one that serves as the main museum, founded in 1340 by St. Athanasius Meteorski;

* The Holy Monastery of Varlaam (1541);

* The Holy Monastery of Rousanou/St. Barbara - decorated in 1560;

* The Holy Monastery of St. Nicholas Anapausas (1527);

* The Holy Monastery of St. Stephen (1545);

* The Monastery of Holy Trinity (1362).

These six monasteries are now top tourist attractions and they attract thousands of tourists every year in the country. They are also among the most visited tourist attractions in Greece and so most tourist companies compete to make better offers for trips to the monasteries for New Year and Christmas, Easter, May holidays.

Each Meteora Monastery has a specific working time in each season. In addition, it is forbidden to enter with short men's pants, women should have long skirts and covered shoulders.
